Surjit S. Patheja, M.D., Associate Professor of World Religions and Ethics in the Department of Theology, Valparaiso University"Indonesian Muslim Women's Movements: Coping with/Processing Radical Trends within Islam"

Levis Faculty Center, 3rd Floor
Summary: The two large Muslim organizations of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah have long represented and guided Indonesia's Muslim population into a moderate interpretation of Islam. Each following their specific traditions, they adapted Islam to the Indonesian culture and environment. Their women leaders transmitted these values and beliefs to children, youth and women. Nowadays, with extremist interpretations of Islam entering the Indonesian scene, these women face the challenge of processing, understanding and reacting to these new trends that in principle threaten their long-held autonomy. This lecture will discuss some of the strategies employed by Muhammadiyah and NU women to formulate answers to the more extremist interpretations of Islam.
Nelly van Doorn-Harder is the Surjit Patheja Chair for World Religions and Ethics at Valparaiso University. She has worked and taught in Egypt and Indonesia and published about the Coptic Orthodox Church and about Islam in Indonesia. Her latest book is Women Shaping Islam: Indonesian Women Reading the Qur'an.
