James Treat, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, teaches courses on indigenous religious and ecological traditions at the University of Illinois. His research and writing have focused on native religious diversity in the contemporary period, especially the relationship between tribal and Christian traditions in native communities, addressing the broader theoretical and practical questions raised by the intersections of religion, culture, and politics in a diverse and conflicted world. He is the author or editor of five books on the native encounter with Christianity, including Around the Sacred Fire: Native Religious Activism in the Red Power Era (Palgrave Macmillan / St. Martin's Press, 2003; paperback edition, University of Illinois Press, 2008) and Tribal Visions of the Church Way: Postcanonical Tracts and Testaments (forthcoming).
